Been a While.

I haven't really updated my blog in a while, so I'm a bit behind on posting blogs for the various assignments. I'm going to attempt to cover some of the things I missed in this post.

PLAYING TO LEARN
I played Elemental Elegance and A-maze-ing Math
  • What did you learn from your choice of games and genres to review?
    • I learned about what happens when various elements are combined.
  • Name any game features that stood out to you, either because they were interesting or because they could be improved.
    • What stood out to me was that in A-maze-ing Math the goal was to add up numbers to get to 100, but sometimes the door would unlock when you don't even have 100 yet.
  • Write down any questions you have about the game or genre you chose. You might answer them yourself later!
    • I don't have any questions actually.
PLANNING YOUR GAME
  • How did your team work together to come up with the idea and all the details of the game? What excites you most about your game idea?
    • I'm actually the only one on my team, and what excites me is that I might actually be able to do a decent game this year.

CHOOSING A TOPIC

  • Write a blog post explaining why you chose this topic. Include links to your three sources.
    • I don't have any real reason for choosing my topic, other than that I found it a slightly interesting.

Getting Closer To a Game

Today I developed a money system for the game. It costs money to move the various units to where the player wants them, and they can gain money by defeating opponents. I also learned that when I try to put font in a text box, the system of scoring won't work. The font causes the scores to disappear.

Testing Some Coding...

I spent most of this class and last class working on action script. I did pretty well last class. I was able to get the coding to work so that whenever an object's health dropped to zero the clip would disappear. Then I managed to get the health text to follow the object when it is dragged around the scene. Today, I've been working on a money system so that when a "tower" is placed on the field, the price of the "tower" is subtracted from the total amount of money. But it seems that I've run into a problem, the text won't load. I even deleted the cash system and made everything like it was in the previous action script, the one where the text follows the object, and it still wouldn't work.

My Topic

This class I finished working on the game facts in Flash. The topic is now officially invasive species. Why I was so persistent on doing this, I really can't remember. I guess its because I feel some interest in it for some odd reason. I also managed to find some really helpful websites when I was researching.

Still choosing a topic

Today I did some more research on my project, and found out a few things. One thing I learned is how to identify a species that could potentially become invasive. Some of the indicators include a fast rate of growth and reproduction, the ability to survive in a wide range of environments, and the ability to survive on a wide variety of food sources.

Choosing a topic

Today I decided to choose to make a social issues game, with a focus on environmental issues. The game will be about invasive species and such. I found out quite a few interesting things when I was researching. For instance, certain species of invasive plants can actually increase the frequency and severity of wildfires.

Helping out

Today has been a tiring day, although that might be because I had absolutely no sleep. One thing I have to say to everyone is try to find an answer on the wiki BEFORE asking me. Sorry, but I just had so little time to actually do some of my own work.
